The 77th Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India will be held from 26th to 30th December 2017 at Jaipur. Dr. Bhanwar Lal Yadav is the Local Organizing Secretary. The following are the guidelines for participation.

  1. Lectures on subjects delivered during ASICON 2009 to 2016 should not be repeated.
  2. The faculty is selected strictly on merit and on experience on the subject.
  3. The faculty should submit the matter of their presentation to the Convener.

NB: – All members desirous of participating in the Symposia & CME Programme must send in their request and matter to the respective Conveners before 31st July 2017.

3. PRESENTATION OF YOUR SCIENTIFIC WORK

ASICON provides the largest and the best podium to show case the scientific work done by the members of the Association of Surgeons of India. Such scientific work will be accepted by ASI under the following categories.

1. Best State Chapter Paper: – One Best paper selected by the State Chapter will be accepted in this category. Endorsement from the State Chapter on the authenticity of paper is needed.
2. Best Research Paper: – Fundamental / Clinical research on any subject related to surgery is acceptable in this category.
3. Best Paper: – Any original work done is acceptable in this category.
4. Best Poster: – Will Be Done As E-Posters Only.
5. Dr C Palanivelu Best Post graduate Paper:- Open only to bonafide PG students
6. Dr C Palanivelu Best Video: – Open to members below 40 years only.
*All single case reports will be included in poster category only.

The above categories are competitive in nature and are open to trainees and young surgeons below 40 yrs. First three positions in all categories carry certificates of merit from ASI.

Knowledge and work of any member can be shared in non-competitive way in the following categories. All presenters will get a certificate of presentation from ASI.

1. Free Paper: – Open to all members
2. Faculty Paper: – Open to Faculty only- Certificate from Head of Institution is needed.
3. Innovation: – Any new innovations developed can be included in this category.

The Presenter should be the member of ASI

Format for abstract of the paper.

1. Use Word format and Times New Roman letters.
2. Title in all capitals and text in single spacing with font size 12 for both
3. Should contain less than 300 words.
4. The abstract must contain AIMS & OBJECTIVES, METHODS, RESULTS & CONCLUSION.
5. Comments like “Results will be discussed” will not be accepted.
6. You may add a line diagram or table in the abstract.

General Instructions

1. Last date for receipt of abstract is 31st July 2017.
2. The presenting author should be a member of ASI.
3. Not more than 2 papers will be accepted from the same presenter.
4. Scientific Committee reserves the right to assign the paper to any session it deems fit.
5. Proof of Registration of the presenter in ASICON 2017 is a must for accepting any paper.
6. There should be a covering letter with a declaration by the presenter that the work is carried out by him / her and team if any and has not been presented or published by him /her earlier.
7. Covering letter should have a mention the category to which the presenter wishes the paper to be included. This should also contain the ASI membership number of the Presenter.
8. The abstract of the Paper, Covering letter with declaration, proof of registration and proof of age for competitive categories can be send by e-mail to ASI at [email protected] or can also be posted to Hon. General Rules

1. The received papers will be acknowledged immediately by the office and if there is any deficiency, the same will be intimated.
2. Only those papers received with full specifications alone will be considered.
3. The Selection committee has the right to shift the Paper into any category based on the merit of the paper and decision of the committee shall be final.
4. Once the Selection process is completed the Presenters of all the accepted papers will be intimated into which category the paper is assigned, its format, rules and regulations.

A. Common Guidelines

1. Nominee should be an Indian Surgeon and shall be a member of ASI in good standing.
2. The Oration must be based on original work, the major quantum of which should have been done in India.
3. The subject of the Oration must relate to SURGERY in any Clinical discipline or basic medical sciences or the natural sciences. Alternatively, the subject may be of a philosophical nature, again with a background of Surgery.

B. Procedure for Applying for an Oration / Endowment Lecture

1. The candidate should be nominated by at least two Ordinary Full Life Members in good standing of the Association of Surgeons of India.
2. Nominee should send his Curriculum Vitae with the list of his Scientific Publications high-lighting his contribution to ASI and in advancing knowledge of Surgery in India. All details of the ASI Awards / Fellowships so far received during the last 10 years must also be listed.
3. The nominee should submit a summary / synopsis of the topic of the oration while applying along with bio-data.
4. All these should be sent to by e-mail to the Hon. Secretary at [email protected]

C. Entitlements

1. A memento, certificate and a scroll will be given during the delivery of the Oration.

RESEARCH AWARD ENDOWMENT – 2018

Rules and Regulations

1. Nominee should be an Indian Surgeon and shall be a member in good standing of ASI.
2. The Award shall be given annually to two persons. One Indian Surgeon and another for NRI for the outstanding and Original Surgical Research work carried out in India and abroad.

Format for preparing the thesis.

1. Use Word format and Times New Roman letters.
2. Title in all capitals and text in single spacing with font size 12 for both.
3. You may add line diagrams / figures / tables / charts as needed.
4. The thesis to be submitted for this purpose should first state a problem and the introduction should indicate the scope of the inquiry and the relevant history of the subject. The thesis should describe the method used for exploring the problem, giving details of methods for measuring or recording phenomenon. It should set forth the data collected by these methods and this should be followed by an analysis of the data and an attempt to deduce conclusions which have a bearing upon surgical knowledge. The thesis should thus embody original observations and show a grasp of scientific literature on the subject.
5. The Name / Names, Degrees and data of the Author should be on a page so that it can be masked while sending for assessment.

Procedure for Applying for the Endowment

1. The candidate should be nominated by at least two Ordinary Full Life Members in good standing of the Association of Surgeons of India.
2. Nominee should send his Curriculum Vitae with the list of his Scientific Publications high-lighting his contribution to ASI and in advancing knowledge of Surgery in India. All details of the ASI Awards / Fellowships so far received during the last 10 years must also be listed.
3. The candidate should submit an application stating clearly what he considers to be his claims as the originality of his thesis as a contribution to the Science and Practice of Surgery.
4. In the event of any candidate submitting co-joint work, he will be required to state fully his own share in this work.
5. (a). The documents mentioned above along with the thesis can be sent by e-mail to the Hon. Secretary of ASI at [email protected] so as to reach him before 31st July 2017.
(b). One hard copy of the same documents need to be send by post to the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 so as to reach before 31st July 2017. The thesis needs to be bound as per the following specifications

Size of Paper : Quarto (10″ * 8″) with one side printing
Margins : Margins 1 1/2″ must be left on the side of each page to allow for binding
Binding: Art Vellum / cloth: Overcast; edges uncut; letter boldly up back in gold (1/4″to1/2″ letter)

C. Entitlements

1. A certificate, scroll and cheque will be given during ASICON 2018.
2. Free registration and local hospitality will be provided to the Awardee by the Organizers of ASICON 2018.

General Principles on Awards / Orations / Endowments

1. A committee appointed by the President will make the final selection on the award of orations / lectures / endowments and their decision will be final.
2. The Committee may withhold the awards if, in their opinion, a certain standard is not reached.
3. If in any particular year no awards are made, the amount of interest accrued out of the Endowment deposit will be credited and added to the Endowment Fund.
4. Consistent with the objects of the Endowment, the Committee shall have the powers to make the changes in the conditions of the Award, as new circumstances may render desirable.
5. To provide incentives to more Surgeons, the person to whom the award has been given once shall not ordinarily be eligible for the same award again.
6. Members are not allowed to apply for more than one oration/lecture/endowment in any year.
7. Members are not allowed to apply for another oration/lecture/endowment in any other year with the same subject on which he had been already awarded one.

6. Applications are invited for

VISITING PROFESSORSHIP OF THE ASI IN GENERAL SURGERY – 2018

Rules & Regulations

1. The application should contain a complete bio-data of the candidate, particularly highlighting the contributions made by him to the teaching and research in General Surgery. It should also contain a brief account of the details of the proposed programme of his visit and the probable institution to be visited. An invitation from the institution should also be enclosed. He should also give full details of the Awards and Fellowships of ASI received during the last 10 years.
2. The Professorship is primarily intended to promote surgical learning in one of the institutions in the country, both in the clinical and research areas, by the visit of an active eminent member of the Association of Surgeons of India.
3. The Visiting Professor should visit non-teaching hospitals where minimum facilities are available, particularly where there is no Medical College. He should spend a minimum of FIFTEEN days for conducting operations and giving lectures, demonstrations etc., and should complete his tour before 31st October of the subsequent year and give his report to the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 with a certificate from the Head of the Institution which he has visited, so that it may be placed before the Governing Council at its meeting in December.
4. The Programme of visit has to finalize by mutual consultation between the Visiting Professor and the Head of the institution to be visited by him.
5. A Certificate, Citation & Plaque would be presented to the Visiting Professor during the Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India.
6. The “Visiting Professor” will be given complimentary registration and local hospitality by the organizers.
7. One hard copy and one soft copy of the Application together with the relevant documents should be sent to by e-mail to the Hon. Secretary at [email protected] or by post to The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 so as to reach before 31st August 2017.
8. The selection would be done by a Committee appointed by the President and the decision of the committee shall be final.

7. Applications are invited for

ASI TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS – 2018

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The Fellowship is meant to be utilized only within our Country.
2. The Fellowship is awarded only to a Full life Member of ASI.
3. The applicants should be below the age of 40 years as on 31st May 2017.
4. A member can apply only for one Travelling Fellowship any one year.
5. The Fellowship will have to be availed in the same year and will not be allowed to be carried forward for subsequent years.
6. The selected candidate will spend a period of 2-3 weeks in a centre of his choice, which should be mutually agreed between himself and the Centre, for updating his knowledge in a given surgical specialty.
7. Documents to be sent include
a.Duly filled up application for the Fellowship in the enclosed format.
b. The curriculum vitae of the applicant with details of the ASI Awards/Fellowships so far received during the last 10 years should also be sent.
c. The acceptance letter from the centre where the candidate wishes to get trained.
d. One hard copy of all the required documents is to be sent by post to the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 or e-mailed to [email protected] on or before 31st July 2017.
8. Applications will be scrutinized by a Committee appointed by the President for the purpose and the decision of the Committee will be final.
9. On completion of the training, the candidate must send a detailed report on the Training obtained to the ASI Head Office, along with a Certificate and report from the Head of the Institution from where he had the training on or before 15th September 2018.
10. A certificate & Award Cheque will be given to the Fellow during the Annual Conference of the ASI in 2018.

8. Applications are invited for

DR. A.K. BASU TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP – 2018

Rules and Regulations

(1) Valid members of ASI are eligible for the Fellowship.
(2) Applications for the fellowship should reach the Hon. Secretary, West Bengal State Chapter of ASI before the 31st July 2017.
(3) Applicants must be surgeons working in India and below the age of 45 years as on 1st September of the year.
(4) Fellowship will be given to a candidate for training in General Surgery or in any surgical specialty in a teaching/non-teaching institute of repute which is competent to undertake such training for updating surgical skill and knowledge.
(5) A Committee appointed by the ASI, West Bengal State Chapter for this purpose will scrutinize the applications and decision of the committee shall be final. The name of the selected candidate will be sent to ASI, Headquarters BY 30TH OCTOBER 2017 by the West Bengal State Chapter of ASI.
(6) Candidate should select the place of training and duration of training and obtain the permission from the said Institute and inform West Bengal State Chapter.
(7) Candidate should send report to the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 and West Bengal State Chapter after completion of the training programme with a Certificate from the Head of the Institution. A report from the institution should be sent to ASI Head Quarters BEFORE 15th September 2018.
(8) Give details of the ASI Awards/Fellowships so far received during the last 10 years.
(9) A certificate & Award Cheque will be given to the selected candidate during the Annual Conference of ASI.

10. Selection Committee will be headed by the President, President-Elect, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer and 3 or 4 GC members also representing various parts of the country. President will have extra voting rights if there is any tie in selection.
11. Candidate once awarded will not be awarded for another time.
12. Candidate must be present to receive the award during ASICON 2018 and if he is not able to attend the conference and receive the award, the respective State Chapter’s Chairman or Secretary should inform the Central Office the reason for his absence.
13. A cheque for Rs.50, 000/- and a certificate will be awarded during the Annual Conference of the ASI to the winner of the award.

10. Proposals are invited from ASI members for

HONORARY FELLOWSHIP OF ASI-2018.

Rules and Regulations

1. Candidates shall be persons internationally recognized in their fields.
2. They should have trained Indian Surgeons or visited India for academic purposes.
3. The proposal along with all records, bio-data, Scientific work done etc., of the candidate should reach the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk Chennai – 600 005 before 15TH SEPTEMBER 2017 for the following year.
4. The selected candidate should present himself personally to receive the Honorary Fellowship of the Association.
5. The number of Honorary Fellowship shall not exceed THREE during any year.
6. Proposals for Hon. Fellowship can be made by any valid member of ASI.
7. The proposer should give full bio-data of the candidate recommended for Hon. Fellowship.
8. The Hon. Secretary will place all the proposals received, before the G.C in December 2017.
9. Organizers of ASICON 2018 will provide the candidate complimentary registration and local hospitality.
10. The Awardee may be requested to give a lecture during the conference.
11. There will be no fee levied from the awardee for admittance to Fellowship.

11. Proposals are invited from ASI members for

GUEST LECTURE IN GENERAL SURGERY – 2018

Rules and Regulations

1. Any member of ASI may propose a name for Guest Lectureship for General Surgery Session of ASI.
2. This should be accompanied by a brief bio data with details of the ASI awards/Fellowships and Guest Lectures so far received in the last 10 years, to reach the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 on or before 31st July 2017.
3. The exact timing, date, duration and format of the lecture will be intimated to the selected candidate in due course.
4. Organizers of ASICON 2018 will provide the candidate complimentary registration and local hospitality.
5. Certificate of Merit will be provided to the awardee after delivering the lecture.
6. There will be only 3 Guest lectures in a year.

12. Proposals are invited from ASI members for

GENERAL SURGERY SYMPOSIA-2018

1. Any valid member of ASI may send the proposals for the annual Symposium
2. The proposer should give the title of Symposium and the scope of the Symposium, giving full details regarding various aspects that may be discussed.
3. The proposals should reach the Hon. Secretary, The Association of Surgeons of India, 18, Adams Road, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 on or before 30th November 2017. So that it may be included in agenda of the G.C in December 2017.
4. The proposer may himself offer to be the convener or suggest some other name, whose consent he should have obtained.
6. At the Annual General Body Meeting the Hon. Secretary will read out all the subjects proposed and give the recommendations of the G.C.
7. Subjects selected for the symposia are to be presented at the Annual Conference for 2018.
8. The Governing Council will recommend three symposia in the order of preference. However each one of the Proposers will be given 2-3 minutes to talk and explain details of his symposia. The General Body will finally select by show of hands and decide on the subject.
