The President and the National Executive Committee of The Association of Surgeons of India, an Organisation that represents the ‘Voice for Surgery” in India strongly condemns the barbaric attack on an Intern on duty at NRS Medical College in Kolkata yesterday.

The entre surgical fraternity in the Country joins me in praying for the speedy recovery of Dr. Paribaha Mukherjee, who is critical in ICU after sustaining grevious injuries. Equally, The Association stands “rock solid” in expressing its unwavering solidarity with the Medical fraternity in West Bengal in protesting against such cold-hearted, insensitive inhuman acts of violence against doctors who are providing selfless round the clock healthcare & emergency services to the population at large.

It is the fundamental duty of the Government to protect its doctors. On behalf of the Association of Surgeons of India, I loudly echo the demand of the Medical fraternity to the Govt. of West Bengal, which must take remedial initiatives briskly in providing protection to the doctors and staff working in Government Hospitals. Security in all Government Hospitals must be strengthened by providing trained guards and recruiting Police Personnel with immediate effect.

The Government of West Bengal must consider this issue as a matter of urgent priority and share the decisive action plans with implementation schedule in this regard with the Medical fraternity this week.
