The ASI, as in the previous years is about to start the Clinical Teaching Programme for the postgraduate students in Surgery for the year 2026 – ASI TYSA 2026. This is the academic flagship programme of the Association of Surgeons of India and will be conducted in FOUR stages (Rounds)

The students in training for MS & DNB in India are grouped into 4 geographic zones.

The first round will be an “ONLINE MCQ” test will be conducted from 1st to 21st May 2026.

The toppers from each of these zones will go to the second round – again an online round and will be based on "investigations" (Biochemistry, Hematology, Radiology) “Instruments & Equipment”.
The toppers from each of these zones will go to the Third round – “The Regional Refresher Courses” (RRC). RRCs are conducted for each of the zones physically where nearly 450 students and 60 faculty from the same zone meet and will be engaged in a mock clinical examination in the lines of MS/DNB exit examination. Each of the toppers gets a unique opportunity to answer four or five potential examiners and gain a lot of confidence in making a clinical case presentation. The registered student delegates in the RRCs get the rare chance to hear the pattern of questions from these teachers in the same zone and the answers expected from a candidate. All the toppers will have a certificate of honour having been selected to the zonal level of competition.

The three toppers from each of the zones in the RRCs will have a similar competitive assessment at the fourth & final round of ASI TYSA 2026 which will be held along with ASICON 2026 at Ahmedabad during December 2026. The winners will get certificates, mementos and huge cash awards.

First Prize ——–3 Lakh (Rs 3,00,000/-)

SOME of the finalists MAY also get a chance for fully / partially funded travel facility and opportunity to gain surgical training from centres of Excellence at different parts of the world. This facility will depend on the funding pattern & policy of the various countries with which ASI has professional relationship.

The gender gap is closing fast but still I think it is fair to say that we do not have equality just yet, despite making good progress. Just as a family understands and supports the needs of women and allows them to grow, we believe that all our members get the required and requisite support. It has become even more important and pertinent because of the large number of lady surgeons in training across the country today. In my first address after taking over as President of ASI, I had taken a resolve to strengthen the entire family of ASI with the help senior lady surgeons who have achieved admirable distinction in their field.

It is a huge challenge for many lady surgeons/residents to maintain a quality work life balance in a predominantly patriarchal and male dominated society. Visible role models play a big part, not only in recruitment and retention of females in surgery but also in supporting them up their surgical careers. With this resolve etched in my mind and partnering with country lead for this venture, Prof. C K Durga, we have spoken to many lady surgeons in positions of authority across the country who have willingly accepted the role of mentors for younger lady surgeons and female residents.

The list of these respected lady mentors is appended herewith. Any female surgeon should feel free to contact mentors they are comfortable with across the nation with full confidentiality. It could be academics, harassment at work, career counselling or even help with burnout issues or just plain venting…..
