Message From President – February 2020

Dear Friends

It has been precisely two months since embarking upon an exciting journey and challenging leadership path of Action, Trust and Hope.

A number of bold and palpable changes have been introduced in the way our Association is governed aiming to ensure “creativity” and “accountability”.

A point to mention – I have taken the decision not to accept the “ASI Betadine Lifetime achievement award”. It has been a tradition for many years (perhaps decades!) for this award to be conferred upon the President during ASICON. The award has Rs 1 lakh reward as well, which in many instances, as a matter of tradition, is gifted to ASI. In my humble opinion, serving as President ASI is NOT a lifetime achievement. This award, in reality, should be conferred upon a deserving surgeon who has spent his “lifetime” making a “meaningful difference” to the profession and society. When the award is conferred at ASICON, the audience must say – ” WoW – well & truly deserving”….In doing so, ASI would be honoured. Rest assured, this would be a reality during ASICON 2020…

Our Website (www.asiindia.org) has been extensively restructured and is dynamic with all major events being updated regularly. When convenient, please view the ASI activities from time to time…

Details & Nominations for various Awards, including Orations for 2021 can be viewed by clicking the following LINK.

Please note the deadline mentioned under each category. Nominations received after the deadline will not be entertained.

Finally, happy to enclose a link to the recently published Editorial in February issue of Indian Journal of Surgery that outlines an my Vision for 2020. Delighted to report that several Courses for trainees outlined in the Vision document have already been held and the rest are on track.

In closing, a very warm welcome awaits you at the 80th annual Conference of our esteemed Association, which would be held in the picturesque coastal city – Visakhapatnam from 17 – 19 Dec 2020. This is the very FIRST time in ASI’s history for an annual Conference to be held on sea front. The Conference theme is “THE ART & SCIENCE OF SURGERY – CELEBRATING 80 GLORIOUS YEARS”.
