SOP FOR ASI Centre of Excellence in Flexible Endoscopy

Association of Surgeons of India plans to conduct a structured endoscopy training program for the budding surgeons (STEP), for which it seeks applications from the surgeons/Institutions that perform a high volume of Diagnostic and therapeutic flexible endoscopic procedures and are willing to train the delegates who applied for the STEP 1 ASI Endoscopic Training program for a period of one week

Guidelines

  • The institution/hospital applying for the credentials as the Centre of Excellence in Flexible Endoscopy should have a regular endoscopy and colonoscopy list, performing a wide spectrum of endoscopic therapeutic procedures
  • HOD or the Senior surgeon who would be the endoscopy mentor should be a member of ASI with vast endoscopy experience
  • The endoscopy suite should possess high-definition Endoscopes and colonoscopes, and all appropriate endo therapeutic accessories
  • There should be a regular endoscopy list performing an average of 10-15 gastroscopies and 2-5 colonoscopy daily, and various numbers of endo therapeutic procedures and ERCP
  • The endoscopy suite should have all basic resuscitation kits in case of any inadvertent complications, and the availability of an anaesthetist before performing high-risk procedures
  • Recovery room with access to monitoring facility and oxygen/suction is recommended.
  • Resuscitation trolley with all emergency drugs /defibrillator should be made available
  • It is preferable but not mandatory to have additional facilities, namely PH study, Manometry and enteroscopy
  • The department should have a dedicated reading room with various endoscopy books and master videos on endoscopic procedures.
  • The institution should possess a clear policy for cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and all accessories

Requirements:

  • The endoscopic department is expected to allow the ASI-endorsed young surgeons, maximum up to 10 surgeons per batch, to observe and assist in the endoscopic procedures for a period of up to 1 week.
  • The faculty should be willing to teach and train the endoscopic aspirants with the basic diagnostic endoscopic skills and are encouraged to actively involve the STEP Endoscopy delegates in all common endoscopic procedures
  • The certificate of Centre of Excellence in Flexible Endoscopy will be issued by ASI HQ and is valid for a period of 5 years initially.
  • ASI will pay Rs.3000/- per candidate
  • Will allow every candidate to perform hands on minimum 2 cases under observation.
