Dear Friends

Warm Greetings

I have been reflecting on a couple of poignant issues & am taking the liberty of sharing my heartfelt thoughts…

ASI Lifetime achievement award is the highest level of recognition conferred by the Association annually upon a surgeon of Indian origin residing in India for his lifetime contribution to the art & science of surgery.

For many years, ASI has been conferring these Awards annually upon a senior member of ASI. There have, however, been no formal guidelines in selecting the awardee.

I strongly believe that the membership at large must be given an opportunity to submit their nominations for this most prestigious honour (“People’s nominee”). And therefore, for the FIRST time in the history of ASI, in an earnest endeavour to ensure crystal clear transparency in selecting the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEE for 2020, a nomination process has been introduced.

On a different note, since 2003, it has been a tradition for President ASI to be conferred with the ASI Betadine Lifetime achievement award during the annual inaugural function at ASICON.

Sometime ago, shared my frank views with the membership that my conscience does not permit me to be bestowed with the “ASI Betadine Lifetime Achievement Award”. Although serving as President ASI has been one of the high points in my life, merely fulfilling my obligation as President ASI does not qualify me to receive this honour. Furthermore, I have not come across any other Organisation that rewards its serving President with a “Lifetime Achievement Award”. And therefore, I humbly decline the award.

In closing, on a positive note, please do look out for the elaborate & landmark “ASI’s Consensus Guidelines – ABCs of What to do & What not during the COVID 19 pandemic” that would feature prominently in the June 2020 issue of Indian Journal of Surgery.

Best regards.

Yours in the service of ASI…
