Celebrate Life! Celebrate Surgeons Life!!
Surgeons Day June 15
National Surgeons week June 9 to 15
We the surgeons are the skilled medical professionals who perform a range of procedures to help people overcome illness, injuries and medical conditions which cannot be treated by medicines. We work tirelessly to improve patient outcomes, conduct research, teach young doctors and to ensure that people receive the best possible care. As emphasised by Jim Yong Kim (President of World Bank 2012-2019) that surgery is “indivisible and indispensable” part of health care, and it is not complete without surgeons and surgical care.
Surgeons Day (June 15th) and Surgeons week (June 9th to 15th every year) is an opportunity to celebrate the vital role that surgeons play in healthcare and to highlight their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their patients. We need to drive home this message by public engagement and proactive programs.
The Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) which is the second largest body of surgeons in the world with more than 40,000 surgeon members is motivating all its members and associated organisations to celebrate Surgeons week in a befitting manner:
- Organise a free health check/free surgery camp or free consultation
- Do one free surgery per surgeon in our own set up during the week
- Associate with other organisations like IMA, Rotary, Lions etc. to reach public
- Organise walkathon/cyclothon to create public awareness
- Organise a press meet and highlight the surgeon’s contributions
- Organise a meeting of all surgeons to celebrate with lunch or dinner; can have guest lectures, CME, surgery demonstrations etc.
- Honour senior or well deserving local surgeons to celebrate his contribution to society and profession
All surgeons across the country and all super/subspecialties are involved. Good photographs, short videos are taken, and good publicity/media coverage of the scientific/ public awareness program is essential. The social media platforms are utilised to create awareness about the life saving/ life altering work the surgeons do. Stories of successful surgeries, facts about surgical procedures and information about how to become a surgeon etc.are shared. A detailed report with photos to will be sent to ASI-HQ. A souvenir/ news letter named “ SURGISCOPE” will be released containing all articles, trivia, memoirs etc including the news articles on celebrations all over India and abroad.
Most important is to take care of ourselves! In our busy schedule surgeons often forget to take care of our own health. Suddenly one fine day we find ourselves with diabetes, hypertension or in cardiac ICU. Surgeons’ Day is a reminder for all of us to undergo an annual health check and take care of ourselves and our family.
Let us celebrate surgeons’ life, a true contributor to society’s welfare!
